About Langkawi,

Langkawi is one of Southeast Asias's best island retreats offering travellers the perfect combination of sun and sea, islands and rainforest, peace and tranquillity, tradition and culture as well as simplicity and sophistication. People come to Langkawi to relax and appreciate this peacefull paradise.

Langkawi Island is located just off the coast of North Western Malaysia, about 30 km from Kuala Perlis and 51 km from Kuala Kedah and close to Thailand. The archipelago of Langkawi contains 99 islands during high tide whereas during low tide, the number of islands can be as many as 104. The islands have some of the most ancient rainforests in the world, teeming with exotic flora and fauna. Langkawi Island itself is the largest among the archipelago, measuring about 478.5 sq km, is the only one with any real settlement. It is fringed by lovely beaches scattered along its coast. The island is still very much a rural landscape with villages and paddy fields.

Kuah is the island capital located on the south-eastern tip of Pulau Langkawi. It is the take-off point to the neighboring islands. The name "Kuah" is a Malay word meaning "gravy" and is associated with an ancient legend of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry at the spot where the town now stands.
Kuah once was a rustic town with a few streets. Present day Kuah is a thriving center of modern hotels and shopping-cum-business complexes, but without the overcrowding and bustle of modern cities. Kuah is a duty free shopping haven with a wide variety of goods sold at attractive prices and its restaurants offer excellent culinary delights, especially fresh seafood.
